WHAT I TELL MY FREELANCE COACHING CLIENTS…

WHAT I TELL MY FREELANCE COACHING CLIENTS…

Money Isn’t The Point.
Freedom Is The Point.

Let’s start with your nose. It’s attached to your face—at least I hope it is. To see it, you must close one eye. Uh-oh. Now you’re half blind.

Your freelance business is also a part of you, and that’s why it’s hard to see the complete picture. As a freelance business coach, I hold up a mirror. My coaching playbook consists of thoughtful questions, careful listening, and hard-won wisdom.

For example, I’d love to teach you about The Golden Suitcase. That one counterintuitive insight changed Stuart’s life.

“I made at least $20,000 more after taking your advice and raising my rates.
Thanks again.”

The Problem With Freelancing

Here’s the problem with freelancing: The skills that get you into business are different than the ones you need to grow the business.

The Problem With Freelancing

Here’s the problem with freelancing: The skills that get you into business are different than the ones you need to grow the business.

37Signals and Basecamp founder Jason Fried put it like this in an Inc. article:

“One thing I do know is that making money is not the same as starting a business. For entrepreneurs, this is an important thing to understand. Most of us identify with the products we create or services we provide. I make software. He is a headhunter. She builds computer networks. But the fact is, all of us must master one skill that supersedes the others: making money. You can be the most creative software designer in the world. But if you don’t know how to make money, you’re never going to have much of a business or a whole lot of autonomy.”

Pow. I wish I had understood that when I first started freelancing back in April 2009.

Just being a good writer wasn’t enough. Or to put it another way, producing high-quality work isn’t the rocket fuel that propels freelancers from Point A to the moon and back.

You don’t know what you don’t know until you know it—suddenly. Please let me send you away with a lightbulb.

Learn how to make money. Master the skill that supersedes the others. Of course, money isn’t the point. Freedom is the point.

Fried would agree: “Making money is about freedom. When you owe people money, they own you—or, at least, they own your schedule. As long as you remain profitable, the timeline is yours to create.”

More profit means more say over how you spend your time. If you were to make an extra $10,000, $20,000, $50,000 this year freelancing, what would you start saying yes to?

Maybe you would go on every single field trip with your kids.
Maybe you’d go on dates with your partner during the day.
Maybe you want to plant a fragrant figgin’ herb garden already. #lifegoals
Maybe you want to travel.
Shoot, maybe you need more rest!

Whatever freedom looks like for you, I will help you stop second guessing yourself, make good decisions faster, and grow your freelance business by doing the work that doesn’t feel like work.

You’re more capable than you realize, and I will challenge you to put in smart, focused work and see extraordinary results.

Is Coaching A Good Fit For You?

See if any of these statements rings true for you…

  • You want to get more freelance clients, but you’re not sure how to get them predictably.
  • You’ve been freelancing for awhile now, but you feel like your growth has plateaued. You are feeling a bit stuck.
  • You’re making enough money to cover your bills, but it’s starting to feel like a job. You want more freedom and flexibility. You want to start dreaming again.
  • You who have already experienced some of the perks of the funemployment lifestyle, but you want more. The profits and the fun quotient still need some TLC.
IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN OVERNIGHT. AND IT’S NOT GOING TO BE EASY. IF IT WERE EASY, EVERYONE WOULD DO IT. AND YOU WOULD HAVE DONE IT ALREADY.

There’s a reason that more people don’t hire coaches. A good coach will challenge your core assumptions. A good coach won’t accept your excuses at face value.

A good coach won’t let you hide or play small. A good coach won’t let you dwell on past mistakes or devalue your services. A good coach demands your best.

And the best coaches? They give you regular doses of hope, peace, and joy.
